There’s no question that RIT has one of the most modern, high-tech campuses in the nation. As a student in the ASL-English Interpretation program, you’ll work in state-of-the-art classroom and video production labs.

The American Sign Language and Interpreting Education Department offers three classrooms, each equipped with 10 interactive digital workstations for viewing and recording videos. You can record English or ASL interpretation in a split-screen format so later you can view both the stimulus and your interpretation at the same time. You can view your files, as well as your instructor’s files, from your dorm room or anywhere on campus through the RIT wireless network.

In addition, your professors can comment on your files by inserting recorded video/audio feedback about your work. You can retrieve your video and watch or listen to your instructor’s feedback overlaid on the video you recorded.

The ASLIE classrooms also serve as open labs during designated evening and weekend hours to support your skill development.

Self-Instruction Lab (SIL)

The SIL is a quiet study environment where you can work individually on course assignments. It offers a large ASL, interpreting and Deaf culture video library. The SIL has 12 instructional carrels where you can watch videos, and two private video production rooms where you can record videos. The SIL is open all day and through the early evening, so when you have a break between classes, you can go to the SIL to work on homework assignments.

NTID Learning Center (NLC)

The NTID Learning Center offers a large number of computers, a printer and a group study room with video production capability where you can work on assignments with your classmates. You can even borrow notebook computers with built-in cameras. The NLC is open all day, plus extended hours during evenings and weekends.

Wallace Memorial Library

RIT's Wallace Memorial Library offers an extensive collection of ASL, interpreting and deaf studies internet resources, journals, books and videos. The librarian for Deaf Studies maintains a number of indexes and subject guides for ASL and Deaf Studies.
