About Toby

Name: Toby Fitch

Major: New Media Design

Hometown: Zanesville, Ohio

Why I Chose RIT: There are many reasons, but access services won me over in choosing to come to RIT. Not only that, I was impressed with the campus itself along with the nationally ranked programs that are offered at RIT.

Clubs/Activities: New Media Club, Dodgeball Club, Student Government, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, intramural sports (basketball, soccer, softball and dodgeball), Innovation Center.

Hobbies/Interests: Design, outdoor recreation, nature and video games.

What I Like Best About RIT: I love how the people are very welcoming, helpful, encouraging and always willing to support whatever you decide to invest your time in.

Favorite T.V. Show: “Lost,” “Raising Hope,” “Modern Family,” “The Office,” “Family Guy” and “Revolution.”

Fun Fact About Me: I used to play for the United States Deaf Men's National Soccer Team, and traveled to England, Greece and Taiwan for international competitions.

Final Quarter

Hello once again!

My Spring Break went extremely well, as I visited an old friend of mine who is also an RIT alum in Clearwater, Florida. Spring Break for me was a blessing, and extremely relaxing. I finally got to go someplace warm for Spring Break, as I went to Seattle last year and all the years before that I went home. Nonetheless, I got to play with my friend’s new puppy, Lulu! Dogs really know the way to make you smile and make you feel refreshed. I’m finally all recharged up to get back in the swing of things.

The first week has already come and gone, I’m pretty much taking every opportunity I can get to meet with everyone before I depart from RIT. My feelings right now are all mixed, all good though, I promise! College has been an extremely fast paced environment, I can’t imagine what it’ll be like once I graduate! (Even though I had a small taste of life outside of RIT on Co-op.) As you may not know, this is RIT’s last academic quarter, EVER, before they make the transition to semesters. Thank goodness I’m graduating before that!

Right now, I’ve been busy with rush week — where all of the Greek Organizations on campus are recruiting for new potential members. My fraternity had dodgeball on one day, a movie the next night, and a simple information session. We ended our week with an excellent brotherhood retreat at our mansion, I surely will miss all of my brothers! Next week will be the final rush week (there’s two weeks in all), where all Greek Organizations are allowed to actively recruit new members, they cannot continue to rush in the following weeks after that due to RIT policy.

Academically, things are picking up, as I am taking four classes, two of which are classes in Deaf Cultural Studies. It’s already been an interesting week. Anyhow, I can finally start working ahead of time as all classes except one class is not an art related class. As an art major, I didn’t have this luxury, as each project relies on constant feedback as I work throughout the quarter.

As I think back now, I have definitely grown from a well known high school athlete to a designer, ready to make my mark on the world, I simply cannot wait to graduate! As usual, I’ll leave you with a few pictures of my spring break (of the puppy)!

Oh, and this was my morning flight to Florida, of the Finger Lakes region. It was absolutely beautiful and pictures don’t do justice!

This weekend was full of fun festivities. Freezefest was this weekend and there were tons of activities. Ice scultures were created, a huge fire that was 4 stories tall, and a famous person, Joe McHale from the well known TV show, “The Community” came to speak.

Super Bowl is a good way to end the freezefest weekend! Although I am not a huge fan of the NFL, (NCAA is better!) I am at the annual Superbowl Party hosted by the Student Government. I mainly watch Super Bowl just for its commercials (I am a design student after all). Anyhow, there’s free unlimited wings, pizza, and food, you can’t complain! There’s two big screens down here (one of them has captions) with a lot of people around. Its definitely the place to be if you have nothing to do! Til next then, have a good week!

Fresh Paint, Cold Weather and Good Eatin’

School is in full throttle once again as this week has been one of the busiest weeks I’ve had for a very long time. The past three days has been full, from 8am all the way to 10pm, very exhausting if you ask me! I realized that I forgot to tell you all that my lab was recently painted while I was gone for break. My classmates and New Media Club president did a fantastic job of painting the lab! Here’s a photo:

This week was really cold, probably one of the coldest it ever has been at RIT. I certainly am not used to this weather at all (it was 6 degrees!) Thankfully, I have a jacket that’s pretty much guaranteed to keep you warm, regardless how cold it is (Ok, maybe I’m just biased,) but Carhartt has always treated me well and kept me warm on days like these! If you don’t know what Carhartt’s are, you’re missing out! Here’s a photo I took on that day:

Last but not the least, last week I actually had time to slow down and cook myself a hearty meal. It’s rare these days to have time to cook as a college student since you’re either working on your projects constantly or sleeping. (Of course there’s some horseplay in between there!) Anyhow, I was so proud I cooked a heck of a meal, I even took pictures of it. Might as well as post it on Pinterest but I’m trying to stay away from that website because I KNOW I’ll be addicted to yet another social media outlet. Anyways, until then…. have a great day!

Back to School Already?!

It’s hard to believe that I’m back to school after two fantastic weeks back at home. While I was at home, it hit me that I have less than 5 months before I graduate! I’m not sure if I’m even going to be back home since I’m looking for jobs out on the West coast, it’s beautiful out there! However, there’s no place like home but hey, I’m even more motivated and excited to fly through the months before it’s here. Anyhow, hope you all are doing great and I’ll leave you with a picture of my sister, her dog and I!
