Faculty and Staff Sign Language Program - Course Details

Language Learning Strand

    This language learning strand consists of a sequence of ASL learning courses that are designed as skill and knowledge development courses. The curriculum is aimed at developing functioning communication skills using American Sign Language as the basis for effective communication in a variety of situations at NTID and RIT. Development of cultural protocols and appreciation of deaf culture is also studied and practiced throughout this language learning strand.
    Language learning classes will be canceled with less than five students, three days before the first day of class in consultation with the department chair.

Practice and Review Strand

    This curriculum strand provides focused practice on specific skills taught in courses from the language learning strand. Courses in this strand are designed for individuals needing review and practice on specific aspects of their sign language skills such as sign production, using space, classifiers or conversational strategies. These courses can be taken while individuals are progressing through the beginning level language strand as recommended by your ASL instructor.

Application Strand

    The purpose of this strand is to facilitate the process of moving from broad areas of ASL skills and knowledge acquired from the language learning and practice/review strands, to the use of language skills needed by faculty and staff in specialized environments to accomplish specific purposes. This strand includes activities that provide opportunities for participants to apply what they have learned to their own specific communication situations at NTID/RIT.
