PRACTICING ASL FEATURES TO ENHANCE SIMULTANEOUS COMMUNICATION #530

Description

Practicing ASL Features to Enhance Simultaneous Communication (SC) is a course intended for faculty and staff who wish to understand social and educational contexts for SC and who want to apply selected ASL features to signing in English word order in a variety of communication situations (one on one, lecture format, small group conversation, etc.) Simultaneous Communication is simultaneously signing and presenting English via speech or lip movement without voice. This course will briefly introduce participants to theory and research related to the effective use of SC. Participants will discuss and be aware of important features of SC, will analyze their use of SC in filmed activities in order to learn to identify features of SC and will learn to evaluate their own SC skills. Participants will practice features of SC and will receive feedback as well as recommendations for additional courses (if needed), which will assist them in improving their sign language skills in general thus leading to more effective use of SC.

Prerequisites: SCPI rating of Intermediate or above, Structure of ASL, Comparing ASL and English, or recommendation of an instructor.
