National Technical Institute for the Deaf

Alvin Boyd, an instructor in the Business Studies Department at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, has been named Special Assistant to the NTID President for Diversity and Inclusion.

Boyd will serve as a member of the NTID Administrative Council and will lead NTID’s continuing efforts to recruit and retain new faculty and staff members that represent diverse ethnic and racial identities. He will also work closely with RIT’s vice president for diversity and inclusion on implementation of NTID-specific programs related to RIT’s “Inclusive Excellence” initiative, which reaffirms the university’s commitment to growing and sustaining a diverse and inclusive learning, living and working environment.

A native of New Orleans, Boyd is a graduate of Delgado Community College in New Orleans, Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, La.

He first came to RIT in 2004 when he enrolled in NTID’s American Sign Language and Interpreting Education program. He graduated from NTID’s Master of Science program in Secondary Education for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Boyd, who lives in Brighton, has also worked in NTID’s Pre-College Outreach and Science and Mathematics Departments.

In addition to teaching, Boyd is a member of RIT’s African-American, Latino-American and Native American Faculty and Staff Association, mentors AALANA students and volunteers for NTID’s outreach programs.

“RIT President Bill Destler and NTID President Gerry Buckley both are committed to diversity and inclusion,” Boyd says. “I look forward to contributing to initiatives that will strengthen our campus community by enhancing the educational experiences of all of our students and serving as a resource to improve the work experiences for faculty and staff.”
