A variety of workshops designed to meet specific learning objectives, are presented to the community throughout the year. Department or center needing specific workshops for professional development opportunities may request these through Larry Scott at lcsnca@rit.edu.


Introduction to Language and Communication

  1. Language and Communication in the NTID Community
    • Provides a summary of demographics which define the communication diversity at NTID.
    • Offers discussion and illustrations of linguistic variation.
    • Addresses the diverse perspectives of language and communication and discusses the roles of spoken English, ASL, simultaneous communication, and PSE.
    • Concludes with characteristics of effective simultaneous communication.


  2. NTID Students' Communication Skills: Information and Access
    • Summarizes NTID Students' Language/Communication Background Questionnaire (L/CBQ) results. This includes preferred communication modes and self-rating of sign and spoken language communication skills.
    • Compares L/CBQ results to objective assessment results.
    • Shows how to access information about students' communication skills


  3. Varieties of Language and Communication
    • Presents a scholarly approach to the description of linguistic and communicative variation in the Deaf community.
    • Addresses such topics as socio-linguistic and communicative phenomena pertaining to spoken and signed messages.
    • Discusses strategies that recognize and encourage a range of language and communication varieties that can increase comprehension, learning and communication.
    • Encourages participants to consider their own use of language and communication.


  4. Managing Group COmmunication
    • Offers participants tips regarding communication in different physical settings as well as communication management strategies in group situations. These different settings could include department meetings, planning, research, curriculum development, or governance type meetings.
