Task Force on Health Care Careers for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community co-chairs Dr. Irene Leigh, chair of Gallaudet’s Psychology Department (right) and Rose Marie Toscano, professor of English in the Department of Liberal Studies at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) are pictured during a break at the first meeting of the task force, held at Gallaudet on September 11.
Over the next 18 months, the task force will develop an action plan to put into motion this ground-breaking initiative to prepare deaf and hard of hearing people—an important sector of the population that has been under-represented in the field of health care—for careers in this expanding profession. Also present at the meeting were President Hurwitz, NTID/Rochester Institute of Technology Interim President James DeCaro, and University of Rochester Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Research Thomas Pearson, whose institutions are partners in the endeavor, along with Rochester General Health System. The next meeting will be hosted by NTID on November 4 and 5. For more information and a list of task force members, go to http://www.rit.edu/ntid/hccd .
