Educating Deaf Students: From Research to Practice

With support from the National Science Foundation and the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, NTID's Center for Education Research Partnerships will be hosting a roundtable presentation series during the 2007-2008 academic year .   Following up on the successful "Cognitive Underpinnings of Learning" conference held in June, ( www.ntid.rit.edu/CognitiveUnderpinnings ), the series will focus on establishing bridges between research and practice with regard to educating deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Technology and technical education (science, engineering, mathematics, and technology) will be a focus of particular interest.

Following the argument of Detterman and Thompson (1997), the series is founded on the premise that educational interventions can never be optimally successful unless we understand the cognitive abilities necessary to take advantage of the interventions and the cognitive tools that the student brings to the classroom. The goal of the series is to provide a forum for discussions among practitioners and researchers concerning the foundations of learning by students with significant hearing losses and how best to optimize learning. The ultimate aim is to foster research partnerships and help to provide funding for projects that will enhance access, educational opportunities, and academic achievement across various age groups and settings.

Roundtables will be held approximately once each month – bookmark this page for more information.
