Unique Sign Language Dictionary Now Available Online
A popular sign language dictionary has recently been adapted for online use. RIT/NTID has developed the ASL Video Dictionary and Inflection Guide. The CD version is used in thousands of schools, colleges, universities and interpreter training programs across the United States and Canada, and has now been updated. It is now available online by subscription for instant access by users.

Student Ambassador Program Launched at RIT/NTID
RIT/NTID Student Ambassadors are now featured on the NTID Web site to showcase role models and student achievers. They are selected by Alan Hurwitz, NTID's CEO and vice president and dean of RIT for NTID. The first four ambassadors explain why they attend RIT/NTID, what their dream jobs would be and what advice they would offer to other students considering coming to RIT/NTID.

Katie Schmitz Wins Prestigious Achiever Award
Katie Schmitz, an assistant professor of English at RIT/NTID,is the recipient of a New York State Senate Achievers' Award.The Award was created to honor and celebrate the personal achievements of individuals who have overcome sometimes extraordinary physical or mental challenges to achieve excellence and improve their community.

NTID to Get First President
The new president of NTID is already making his mark with a hand print.
Alan Hurwitz's print will be part of the Hall of Leaders for an upcoming student banquet celebrating the institute's 40th anniversary. His new position is regarded as a huge accomplishment within the deaf community.

First President of NTID Named
Rochester Institute of Technology President William W. Destler and RIT's Board of Trustees have named T. Alan Hurwitz president of RIT's National Technical Institute for the Deaf. It is the first time a president has been named for NTID in its more than 40-year history.

Winners Announced in Math Competition at RIT/NTID
More than 50 students with hearing loss from across the country participated in the MATHCOUNTS competition April 4 to 6 at RIT/NTID.
This competition - specifically for middle school students who are deaf or hard of hearing - is designed to promote math as fun and engaging.
The competition had three rounds that tested speed, accuracy, teamwork and additional "mathletic" skills.

RIT Study: Sign Language Interpreters at High Ergonomic Risk
Sign language interpreting is one of the highest-risk professions for ergonomic injury, according to a new study conducted by RIT. The research indicates that interpreting causes more physical stress to the extremities than high-risk tasks conducted in industrial settings, including assembly line work. It also found a direct link between an increase in the mental and cognitive stress of the interpreter and an increase in the risk of musculoskeletal injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis.

African-American, Latino American and Native American students with hearing loss who are entering 7th, 8th, or 9th grade are invited to Steps to Success, a career exploration mini-camp August 8 to 10 at NTID.
