Rochester Institute of Technology is accepting entries in its fifth annual Digital Arts, Film and Animation Competition for deaf or hard-of-hearing middle and high school students. Students in grades 9 through 12 can use their creative talents and artistic expression in six categories: Web Page Design, Graphic Media, 3-D Animation, Film, Interactive Media and Photo Imaging. Winners receive cash prizes and a trip for two to Rochester in the spring. Deadline to enter is Jan. 15, 2010.

More than 150 people attended a Veterans Day ceremony at the Dyer Art Center at RIT/NTID this morning. More than 175 students at RIT are receiving veteran benefits. RIT this year became a "Yellow Ribbon" college and began an outreach program for veterans with hearing loss - a lead disability of men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They talked about growing up deaf, NTID and some memorable encounters they've had. Excerpts of their interviews (and transcripts) are here. A DVD that allows audiologists and speech pathologists to measure the ability of a lip reader is now available for audiologists and speech pathologists. The results help to determine functional receptive communication ability and assist in predicting benefit from speech language / audiologic therapy, hearing aids or cochlear implants.

"Hear and Now," a documentary featuring RIT/NTID retirees Paul and Sally Taylor as they received cochlear implants, is now available on DVD. The film appeared on HBO, earned a Peabody Award and was named Best Documentary by the audience at the Sundance Film Festival.
