Founded in 1829 and emphasizing career education, Rochester Institute of Technology is a privately endowed, coeducational university that includes eight colleges.
The Campus occupies 1,300 acres in suburban Rochester, the third-largest city in New York State.
The RIT Student Body consists of approximately 10,000 full-time and 2,100 part-time undergraduate students, and 2,400 graduate students. Enrolled students represent all 50 states and more than 80 foreign countries. Deaf students number approximately 1,150.

Cooperative Education provides career-related work experience in many degree programs. RIT has the fourth oldest and one of the largest cooperative education programs in the world, annually placing 2,600 students in co-op positions with 1,300 employers. More than 450 companies visit RIT annually, conducting more than 5,000 employment interviews.

Degrees
RIT offers the associate in science (AS), associate in occupational studies (AOS), associate in applied science (AAS), bachelor of fine arts (BFA), bachelor of science (BS), master of business administration (MBA), master of engineering (ME), master of fine arts (MFA), master of science (MS), master of science for teachers (MST), and the nation's only doctoral program (Ph.D.) in imaging science.
Wallace Library is a multimedia resource center with a collection of more than 800,000 items. Resource materials include 3,400 journal subscriptions, 20,000 electronic journal titles, 438,000 microforms, 3,100 audio cassettes and recordings, 6,700 film and video titles, and more than 330,000 books.
Housing
Many of RIT's full-time students live in RIT-operated residence halls, apartments or townhouses on campus. On-campus fraternities, sororities and special-interest houses are also available. Freshmen are guaranteed housing.
Student Activities
Major social events and activities are sponsored by the College Activities Board, Residence Halls Association, sororities, fraternities and special-interest clubs of many kinds. There are more than 100 student organizations on campus.
Athletics
RIT offers a wide variety of activities for students at all levels of ability. Men's hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and women's volleyball and hockey often are ranked nationally. Many other RIT teams receive recognition in the Northeast.

More than 50 percent of RIT students participate in intramural sports programs. Indoor and outdoor facilities include the Hale-Andrews Student Life Center, with five multipurpose courts and eight racquetball courts, fitness center, dance/aerobics studio and indoor track; the Clark facility, featuring two gymnasiums, swimming pool, wrestling room and weight room; an ice arena; and outdoor facilities that include tennis courts, an all-weather track and numerous athletic fields.
