Helen Yu

Helen was born in Northern California to parents who emigrated from China. She considers herself hard of hearing, which began after an illness when she was 5. She was mainstreamed throughout her childhood and attended a high school – where she learned sign language - with about 40 other deaf and hard-of-hearing students. She has four siblings and plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree after finishing her associate program at NTID.

Why did you come to RIT/NTID?: 
I love the friendly environment with the blended deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing students and support services offered.
Best thing about college so far: 
The diversity of people. They're amazing!
Best thing to do off-campus in Rochester: 
Trying new foods, touring around and socializing with friends.
People may be surprised to know: 
...that I met World Champion figure skater Michelle Kwan on my Christmas vacation with my family in Honolulu two years ago.
Favorite food: 
Any international food.
Favorite movie: 
"Wall E" and "Kung Fu Panda"
Favorite Sport: 
Billiards, hiking and ice skating.
Clubs: 
Student government (senator); NTID Business Club; Circle K International; Asian Deaf Club.
Hobbies/Interests: 
Traveling, sightseeing, relaxing, listening to music.
Dream Job: 
Working with the federal government or owning a business.
Where will you be five years from now?: 
Hoping to volunteer and travel. I have a huge passion for helping people in need.
What would you like to tell the world?: 
We all have the same dream: Peace, happiness, to be healthy and loved.
