Scott Farrell

Scott became deaf as a toddler. He attended St. Mary’s School for the Deaf in Buffalo and went to a public high school part time starting in eighth grade; he attended a public high school full time starting his junior year in high school. He was a championship swimmer and team captain, winning numerous awards in high school including team MVP for two years, and breaking the school’s 100-yard freestyle record twice with a time of :49.35. A member of the RIT swimming team, he was named “Rookie of the Year” his first year. He competed with the first-place U.S. National Deaf Swim Team at the World Deaf Swimming Championships in Portugal last summer and took home three medals. When not in the pool, he is focused on his school work – he has made the Dean’s list every quarter while at college and holds a 3.9 GPA.

Why did you come to RIT/NTID?: 
To receive an excellent education, to get my degree and to meet people. I knew it was best to come to RIT because its deaf community is involved with the hearing community. I also wanted to swim on the RIT team.
Best thing about college so far: 
Making new friends, being independent and swimming for RIT.
Best thing to do off-campus in Rochester: 
To meet new people, make friends and the independent environment.
People may be surprised to know: 
...that I was ranked number one in western New York for discus and I can hold my breath swimming underwater for 50 yards.
Favorite food: 
Cottage cheese.
Favorite movie: 
“Scarface,” “The Godfather Trilogy,” and “Pride.”
Favorite Sport: 
Swimming
Hobbies/Interests: 
Relaxing, hanging out with friends, doing my homework in advance and playing sports with friends.
Dream Job: 
HVAC technician/CIMT Technician.
Where will you be five years from now?: 
A successful worker with excellent pay, hopefully owning a house and maybe a family with my future wife!
What would you like to tell the world?: 
I, Scott Farrell, am not a quitter. I will NEVER give up working hard and being a successful worker.
Advice for incoming RIT/NTID students: 
Do your homework as soon as possible! Do your projects earlier! Prioritize: 1) Education. 2) sports/hobby 3) friends/loved one 4) rest time!
