Marianne, who first came to NTID in 1974, is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies and Services. For 12 years, she served NTID in special assignments as the Curriculum Resource Associate (CRA), first in the Center for Arts and Sciences, and then in the Office of NTID Academic Affairs. As the CRA, Marianne guided the development, review and approval of NTID’s curriculum actions and assured that they were reflected in RIT’s Graduate, Undergraduate and Course Description Bulletins.

She has spearheaded the conversion of NTID’s academic programs and courses from quarters to semesters. She has also collaborated with chairs and program directors in the creation, implementation and reporting of student learning outcomes assessment for academic programs, general education and academic support areas.

Through her interactions with faculty, staff, administration and relevant committees, she has enhanced NTID’s reputation across the university for being as a leader in outcomes assessment and curriculum proposals. Marianne contributed on several committees for the establishment of general education outcomes at RIT, worked with faculty from NTID and the College of Liberal Arts in designing rubrics for an assessment pilot program, and has contributed to RIT’s assessment reporting to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

In her discipline area, Marianne has developed over 15 communication courses and evaluation instruments, taught over a dozen courses, and instructed scores of students in speech-language therapy. She has published scholarly articles and presented at many national and international conferences on critical thinking, outcomes assessment, pronunciation, prosody, speech intelligibility, conversational management and speech-language therapy with students who have cochlear implants.

Marianne contributed to the creation, maintenance and revision of a website for Speech-Language Professionals, including production of web-based instructional training videos and technology tutorials.

As an Associate Editor of The Volta Review, a member of communication-related organizations, and through service on several RIT and NTID committees and other initiatives, Marianne collaborates with a variety of professionals and contributes in numerous ways to NTID’s mission of educating deaf and hard-of-hearing students and preparing others to work with them.

She received her bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Northwestern University and her master’s in Education from Syracuse University. She also holds professional certifications related to Speech-Language Pathology.
