NTID Counseling & Academic Advising Services

Counseling & Academic Advising Services (CAAS) is a team of unique and dedicated counselors and academic advisors who provide personal counseling, career counseling, academic advising and consultation to all RIT deaf and hard-of-hearing students following the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are in Career Exploration Studies or in associate degree programs in the College of NTID are assigned an NTID counselor/academic advisor who provides personal counseling, career counseling, academic advising and consultation as appropriate.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are in bachelor’s degree programs in the other eight colleges of RIT are assigned an NTID counselor who provides personal counseling and consultation as appropriate. The NTID counselor also works with the student’s primary academic advisor and his/her academic support team to provide a comprehensive system of support in all aspects of the student’s college life.

Members of CAAS foster student growth overall that also extends to deaf and hard-of-hearing high school students by working as career counselors for Explore Your Future, a career exploration camp. In addition, they work with incoming new students as career seminar instructors at the Summer Vestibule Program, NTID’s orientation program, and serve as guest lecturers in Freshman Seminar. Members of CAAS also serve as advocates for student conduct hearings as requested and volunteer with various RIT-related events.
