THE SLPI AT NTID: OCAS

The primary task of OCAS is to coordinate, manage, administer, and evaluate the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI), a conversational approach to sign language communication skills assessment. The SLPI involves a one-on-one recorded conversation between an interviewer and a candidate, and these conversations are then rated independently by SLPI team raters. More information about the SLPI can be found in the "SLPI Process" section of this website.

OCAS also administers the Classroom Sign Language Assessment (CSLA), which assesses instructors' use of sign language in classroom lectures.

The Office of Communication Assessment Services (OCAS) was established to support the goals of the NTID communication policy. NTID has a strong, long-standing commitment to create and maintain an academic environment which is as inclusive as possible regarding the communication, participation, and enrichment of its community members.

This commitment has rested on three fundamental principles: basic courtesy in communication with others, equal access for all regarding the open flow of information within the NTID community, and sensitivity and respect for all cultural and individual differences and the variety of communication approaches.

There is also a link to the left for the Group Communication Observation Tool (GCOT), which is not administered by OCAS.
