NTID Overview
Center for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation NTID Support for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students
The National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) Support Team provides services for deaf and hard of hearing students involved in the Center for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation courses and programs. The team is committed to providing quality services that maximize access for students who are engaged in Wellness/Activity courses, Intercollegiate Athletics, Intramural and Recreation programs.
NTID team members teach courses in the wellness area using the direct instruction method (signing for themselves). Consultation/advising is provided to deaf and hard of hearing athletes and Intercollegiate coaches. Communication team building workshops are also offered for intercollegiate teams. Athletes are provided recognition and support through special sponsored events. The support team serves as a liaison between the NTID Admissions Department and the Center for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation.
Opportunities for students to develop leadership and professional skills are offered through the coordination and management of a peer educator paraprofessional Sport Assistant program. Through collaboration with other units within NTID and RIT the student paraprofessionals utilize a variety of creative strategies and programming efforts that support access, inclusion, teambuilding, and education.
The Department of Access Services provides interpreting, speech to text and notetaking services for deaf and hard of hearing students in all aspects of college life. Many wellness/activity classes are “flagged” for having support throughout the registration process, however a request must still be made on-line. Go to the NTID Request for Services link on SIS main menu to request services on-line. Registering for a course is NOT a request for services.
