This specialty preparation is offered as an option for students pursuing full time studies in the Master’s degree program in Speech-Language Pathology at Nazareth College of Rochester. The Master’s degree plus specialization will require five consecutive semesters of study (including the first summer).

Students will receive special training in:

• The cultural, social and educational issues facing deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families
• Assessment of speech, language and communication abilities of deaf and hard-of-hearing children
• Intervention strategies for speech and language, including the use of technology

• ASL, Cued speech, and other means of communication

In addition, information about cochlear implant technology and use will be extensively addressed throughout the curriculum. Clinical practicum will provide sufficient opportunities to work with individuals who use cochlear implants.

 


The following courses are required:

A. 5 courses specifically focused on deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals
• Early Intervention
• Developmental Issues with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Learners
• Assessment and Intervention Strategies for Facilitating Spoken Language
• Cochlear Implants: Technology and Use
• Educational Audiology

B. 4 courses offered as part of the regular master’s degree program
• Voice Disorders
• Language Disorders
• Phonological Disorders
• Research Methods

In addition, 75 of the required hours of clinical practicum must focus on assessment and intervention with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals

 

 


This program is funded by a personnel preparation grant from the
Department of Education. The grant provides $18,000 in tuition assistance plus a stipend for books and extra-curricular workshops.

 

 


Application and acceptance to Nazareth’s graduate program in
Speech-Language Pathology is required. A supplementary application
to the specialty program is also required.
