Bernard “Bernie” Hurwitz is associate vice president of RIT for NTID Administration, with primary oversight responsibility for the college’s student services, college operations, government relations, human resources, and institutional research. He also provides confidential advice and counsel to President Buckley and the other members of the NTID Administrative Council.

He came to NTID after several years as coordinator of Labor Relations for the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership. Before that, as a practicing attorney, Mr. Hurwitz counseled private and public schools, colleges and universities while at law firms Nixon Peabody and Harter, Secrest & Emery.

Prior to law school, he served as a legislative assistant in the New York State Senate and interned in Rep. Louise Slaughter’s Washington office. He holds an A.B. in Politics and Teacher Preparation from Princeton University; a J.D., magna cum laude, from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law; and a certificate in Contract Administration Studies from the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations.

Mr. Hurwitz is past president of the Rochester School for the Deaf’s board of directors and has served on the boards of TDI and the Pittsford Little League. He is also a past commissioner of the American Bar Association’s Commission on Disability Rights.

He lives in Pittsford with his wife, Stacy Lawrence, who is an RIT alumna.  Their daughter Susan is a freshman and member of the varsity rowing team at Hobart and William Smith Colleges; their son Ethan is a freshman at Pittsford Sutherland.
