Science and Mathematics Support Services

Services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students taking courses in RIT's College of Science and College of Health Sciences and Technology

Faculty in NTID's Department of Science and Mathematics provide academic support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students enrolled in courses in RIT's College of Science (COS) and College of Health Sciences and Technology (CHST). NTID instructors with graduate training in biology, chemistry, mathematics/statistics, the medical sciences, physics, and related fields serve as tutors for courses in these areas. Counselors trained in discussing and resolving personal, social, and career issues also are available. All of these professionals are skilled in teaching and communicating with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Further, they have developed strong relationships with COS and CHST faculty to advocate for student success in their programs.

Upon completion of an associate degree, you can receive guidance in applying to a bachelor's degree program in RIT's School of Individualized Study as well as in COS and CHST. Advisors are available to explain curriculum requirements and to assist with the transfer process. This group of faculty and staff comprises a first line of contact for deaf and hard-of-hearing students looking for information or advice related to bachelor's degree programs at RIT.

Services provided for students include:

  1. Individual and small group tutoring for courses offered in RIT's COS and CHST.
  2. Co-op/internship advising and career counseling. Students receive assistance with internship applications, resumé writing, and the crafting of personal statements.
  3. Personal counseling. Counselors are available to support students in personal matters such as adjusting to college life; the choice of career and academic program; and issues of identity, relationships, communication, academics, and career planning.

For general questions about science and math support services, contact the department chairperson.
